"Piece of junk... Do not buy this or any other VIZIO TV" 2009-07-19
By Israel Zayas
Purchased the 47 inch 1080P VIZIO. (rate negative star)

Lasted two weeks before it started to develop problems, the screen fuzzed during the day, but it would work beautifully in the evening, could not figure out why this was happening... then after a month all fizz all the time. Needless to say I called VISIO and customer service was either not helpful or would hang up on me by transfering me to a bogus number that gave a generic recording before hanging up. And don't try to call their extended warranty number... they refer you to VISIO and tell you that VIZIO must honor their 1 year warranty before they could look at it.

- After looking on the net for VISIO reviews, it seems either the power board or the signal board is the problem, a common problem they don't want to address and something that would require a visit from a TV repair person.

Note:

I had an APC battery surge protector attached to it and no cable service (atsc antenna) and still the tv gave me problems (switching VGA, HDMI, etc. still produced this problem).

"An excellent alternative to Samsungs, Sonys and Panasonics" 2009-06-12
By Dad and Mom in NC
I just purchased this set at Costco. It's the 30A version, which has been improved significantly from the 10A version. (these specs come from the manual that I received with the 30A version. The manual on the Vizio site is for the 10A version.)

- Better Display. The 30A uses a new panel which displays 1.07 billion colors. The 10A panel displays 16.77 million.

- Better port access. There are now 2 HDMI, 1 Component, and 1 Composite connections all on the side. Another 2 HDMI, 1 Component, and 1 Composite connections, 1 s-video, 1 RGB around back.

- Improved Contrast Ratio. They bumped up the contrast from 1000:1 (2000:1 DCR) up to 1300:1 (6500:1 DCR).

- More Energy Efficient. It even appears they've improved the energy use from 280w avg to 157w avg. (set now featured on the Energy Star site).

- Lighter Weight. The 30A version (59 lbs) tv is even about 18 pounds lighter than the 10A version (77 lbs) (perhaps due to the change in panel).

- Thinner Bezel. The 30A version is now just under 44" w. The 10A was 44.5" w.

I've have not noticed any off-angle color shifts or dimming unless you're at the extreme edges. Even the speakers are much better than I expected (although I use a surround system for movies, etc).

I sat there at Costco and tweaked the Vizio until it looked better than the 46" 120hz Samsung sitting next to it (with the exception of really deep black levels and no 120hz).

Overall, this is just an excellent set. The only things that would make it better in my book would be 120hz, even deeper black level, a swivel stand, volume limiting, and if it cleaned my floors for me.

"Excellent Value For The Money" 2009-05-07
By Matthew S. Putzel
I purchased this TV over a year ago, and I couldn't be happier. It's picture is sharp, bright and natural. I use it for HDTV over cable, as well as Blu-Ray discs, DVDs, and games on the PS3 and Wii, and all of it looks great. It also has a lot of connectivity options with four HDMI ports. I'm very pleased with this purchase and would definitely consider Vizio in the future.

 "I love this tv!" 2009-01-06
By Jay Crofford (Concord, NC)
I bought this in July at BJ's Wholesale Club and I absolutely love it. I did a lot of research before deciding on a Vizio. I currently have it hooked up to a high end blu ray player, and the picture quality is outstanding. I am so happy I did not pay 15% extra or more for a Sony or Samsung, and also, it is fun for me to support the new kid on the block!

2 Big thumbs up!

 "GREAT TV" 2009-01-02
By JennKD (Smyrna, TN USA)
This is my first LCD TV and I couldn't be happier. The picture is fantastic with HDMI input on HD channels, and pretty good with SD channels and comp. input. Beautiful design. Set came assembled and ready to go. 4 HDMI inputs. Decent speakers. Also has PIP you can program to show different inputs (you can watch the TV in the corner while a movie is on, etc.). Overall, a fantastic value.

"My Fault: Should Have known Better!!!!!!!" 2009-02-11
By G Word (Maryland)
DO NOT! REPEAT; DO NOT BUY THIS TV!! I own several large screen LCD TVs all within the $1500 - $1800 range. This TV is no comparison to their picture quality or any other performance category. I bought this TV because of the low price and placed it in a room that is seldom used for TV viewing so high picture quality was not the objective. However, any TV should at least be reliable regardless of price. After 4 months of very infrequent use, the TV simply would no longer turn on. Although frustrating, matters became horrible when dealing and negotiating with the Westinghouse Contact Center for repair services. Without going into the ugly details, all I can say is that it took me THREE MONTHS to finally get Westinghouse to stand behind their product. Ultimately I substituted the TV during this ordeal and realized that I should have made the alternative competitive purchase (only for $180 more) in the first place. I can't tell you how upseting it is/was to learn later that almost everybody had the same problem, in otherwords a manufactured defect associated with the powersave mode. The bottomline is that this is a "low budget" TV; "Low Quality" Picture; and "Low Quality" Service. There are too many good LCD TV alternatives in this price range and for a little more money, substantially better products in all measureable categories. If the picture quality or anything else were better, I would at least say that it might be worth the try as an entry level LCD TV set. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. I am not saying this to be mean, but Westinghouse should be ashamed of itself!

"Get what you pay for: decent TV for a decent price" 2008-12-29
By Steven M. Perry
I've had this TV for over a year now and it has been a fine TV during most of that time. This is a quick, simple review of my experience with it:

Pros:

-It's hard to get a large 1080p picture for much less. The value is very good. This was my first HDTV and I could only grin when I first saw a good 1080p signal on it. Its an incredible leap from analog cable.

-Allows for full appreciation of Blu-ray. This media is so much better than DVD for video quality. Suggestion: Do not buy Blu-ray discs, but rent from Blockbuster or Netflix.

-Simple to set up with easy menu navigation and fairly expansive settings

-Performance surpasses its price

-Built in tuners are very capable. Over the air 1080p looks great.

-Very good 480i scaling. It makes the difference between analog and digital 480i cable almost unnoticeable.

-Many inputs. My roommate and I have quite a few game systems and the 4 HDMI inputs have been very useful.

-Built in sound system is good, but will eventually develop vibrations.

Cons:

-Experiences PS3 flickering over HDMI (See below)

-Poor black levels: must decide between dark blacks with bad shadow definition -or- good shadow definition and gradient with noticeably light blacks

-Poor scaling of 480p signal. My Wii looks better on 480i than 480p settings.

-Slight shadowing of 1080p VGA signal. Remedied by using DVI output from PC to VGA converter.

-The settings for all of the HDMI inputs are linked. You can set specific video settings for all the different inputs except the HDMI inputs, which all must have the same settings. Changing the brightness for one changes it for all of them, for instance.

Issues:

-It looked much better after adjusting the settings at home than it did in the store; set the sharpness up to 70 or 80, for instance.

-Slight Audio-Visual lag at times. I can't reproduce the pattern, but sometimes the voice will come significantly before the movement of the actor's mouth. This is especially detrimental in fast-reaction based games.

-My PS3 connected via HDMI would flicker. The signal would go in and out, which was very disconcerting during a climactic action scene on a 1080p blu-ray. This problem was especially prevalent on 720p signals. THIS HAS SINCE SUBSIDED AND DOES NOT HAPPEN ANYMORE. I'm not sure why.

-Recently, my set has experience significant red "snow" or fuzz in dark areas with distortion of whites or light grays. I luckily bought the set with a credit card that provides an extended warranty, but otherwise I would be out of luck. It makes some media almost unwatchable. This has been a major problem and will require repairs. Note that this issue arose less than 2 years into the life of the set.

-I attempted to update my firmware and this process was impossibly difficult. The site does not let you download by mouse click, but instead requires that you input your serial number. It tells my mine is invalid. Westinghouse phone support is of no help in this matter.

Overall:

This far after the purchase, I can say that I would only recommend this set if you are absolutely dying to have an HDTV and are feeling very light in the checkbook, like I was. I would not buy a 720p TV ever, but this is the bare minimum for a 1080p set. If you're going to spend the $[...], go ahead and spend the extra few hundred for a better set, especially with deeper blacks. It will bother you if you're in a dark room watching a nighttime scene in a movie and the night sky looks like a dull gray light filling the room. Also, things like black suits and hair lose their definition on this set. I have had numerous issues with the set and am now having it repaired a year and a half after buying it. Like I said, this set made me smile when I first had 1080p video and games on it, but the problems and shortcomings make me wish I had spent just a little more.

UPDATE (10/3/09):

I wanted to love this TV. It was my first HDTV. I bought it in my third year of college with three roommates putting in $[...] each to help. Coming from standard definition CRT and rear projection sets, this set looked pretty good. The blacks were fairly crushed, and shadows in scenes looked uniformly gray. But 1080p was very impressive, and as I've used it extensively for game playing, the high resolution has been great with my PS3 and my roommates 360.

HOWEVER, when I spend $[...] on a piece of electronics, I expect it to serve its purpose for more than a year and a half, which this set did not. I purchased the set in August of 2007, and in November 2008, it began to exhibit very bad color distortion and red "static" or "snow" in dark areas. I spent quite some time adjusting the picture settings to make it watchable, but it was simply miserable to look at. Luckily, I purchased a 2 year third party warranty with the set, and am currently in what's been a 3 month long warranty repair process. Evidently, the main data board is in need of repair (a $[...] part).

Mind you, the set is failing after less than a year and a half of moderate daily use. This comes in addition to the various problems common with this set (dropping of input signals, failure to pick up input from the PS3, losing signal when changing resolutions, vibration of TV cabinet with speakers), all of which I have experienced. Do not buy this TV. You can purchase a much better set for only a few hundred dollars more. Had I had a little more wisdom under my belt, I would have done the same.

I cannot recommend this set to any prospective buyer. For more information, read the AVSforum owner's thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=851860&page=182

While the price is tempting (I've seen it as low as $[...]), this set experiences a major failure after around 18 months. In my opinion, a product recall or class action suit against Westinghouse is in order. That forum is filled with 200 pages of consumers who spent $[...] on a TV that last them less than 2 years, and that my friends borders on theft.

"Do you feel lucky, Punk?!?" 2008-12-22
By Thomas King (SC)
Great TV, IF you get one that stays working. Great sound, great picture, great tuner and inputs, great in most every respect. Spotty reliability, and pee poor service if you need warranty service. Get it cheap and get a 3rd party warranty and it'd be reasonable, just do not leave yourself at the mercy of Westinghouse.

After WH support saying that someone will call in 4-5 days, that plus a few and still no call. Then finally get through to the local service, and guess what? No action at all! "Well we have thousands of customers, and there's just me" says the receptionist. 2 or 3 weeks to get the part, after they order it too! Then just the one part WH phone support thinks it is, if they've guessed wrong and the power board happens to have taken out the other board or the screen I could literally be looking at months.

The set is almost wonderful! A percent or two on better engineering, a percent or two to go ahead and ship boards out when called for and 2nd day air etc and things would be fine. Instead they run a seriously mickey mouse repair method to save a few bucks, and guarantee that customers buy something else next time. WH management makes the Big 3 CEO's look like geniuses..

Got it at Costco, and fortunately after the warranty repair problems they took it back despite being outside the 90 day direct return period. If they hadn't been decent I'd have been screwed at least for weeks if not 2 or 3 months.

Great stuff if it stays working, but you'll be quite sorry if you get one of the bad ones. Costco stopped carrying a couple weeks after my purchase, they and several other retailers had a good price and sold them off 6 months ago. No need to wonder why.

"You get what you pay for" 2008-11-30
By Ace of Sevens (Cedar Rapids, IA USA)
I bought this back in May 2007 when it first came out because the death of my previous TV put me in a bind. Had I waited to see some more reviews, I probably would have purchased a different model. First the pros:

* Good price for a 1080p of this size.

* Sharp, bright image image. Seems to resolve pixel-for pixel on HDMI.

* Does 1080p over component, which is good for those of you with older Xbox 360s.

* Plenty of inputs.

* Digital and analog tuners use a single cable.

* No significant response-time problems

* Low weight and small footprint mean you can place this on many kinds of stands and movie it without too much difficulty.

Now the cons:

* Image brightness is a bit uneven, though not awful. The upper corners are a bit brighter than the rest.

* It crops 480p signals in wide mode about 5% each off top and bottom and less at the sides. This is true for both component and HDMI. High-def signals are framed correctly.

* HDMI is finnicky. My PS3 wouldn't be recognized at all for a while, then got so it would freqently blink out. Running the HDMI through a receiver resolved this, but it's something to keep in mind if connecting directly to the TV.

* Can't be calibrated quite correctly. I couldn't get color bars on spec no matter what I did, though it comes quite a bit closer than many cheaper TVs. I got red and blue close to right, though still visibly off, but it has a significant green push that can't be adjusted out.

* The TOSLINK out seems to down-mix everything to 2-channel. This means you can't watch HDTV in 5.1 without an external tuner. I have no idea why it would do this as it requires alteration to the signal.

* If there's a power outage, or you unplug the TV, you lose all your calibration settings. You'd better write them down somewhere.

* The worst problem is the black levels. Blacks actually glow. There is no shadow detail to speak of. Many video games were unplayable until I cranked them to just not look dark anymore. Kristin Kreuk's hair is just a void in the picture, as is the case for any other dark-haired actor. This really cuts into the benefits of high-def presentation.

 "Outstanding" 2009-07-20
By Deegan Peter (Scottsdale, Az USA)
I have been researching on and off for almost 6 months trying to find the "perfect" tv that will fit my needs and my pocketbook. I have reviewed the technical details and the specifications of numerous tvs and had narrowed the search down to the Samsung LN46B630 and the Phillips 47 PFL6704D. I had decided on the Samsung and went to my local Sam's Club to buy it when the manager of the electronics area, told me they had a rash of returns on the Samsungs over the last month.

I had no reason not to switch as both units were at the top of my list, but after making my decision and purchasing the Phillips and using it for 10 days, I know I made the right decision.

Arriving home with the TV my wife assisted me in removing it from the box. This task is made very easy by the clever design of the box. It is a two person job. Do not try it by yourself as you are likely to tip it over and damage the TV. The next day, the Direct TV guy came and installed our dish and hooked up the tv. He hooked up the tv and couldn't believe the tv didn't appear to need any adjustment right out of the box. He also couldn't believe how effective the matte screen reduced the amount of reflection nearly to zero.

I have only had one LCD TV and that was a 26inch Vizio in my RV. It seemed to take forever to get that adjusted for acceptable color etc. The Phillips seemed to need no adjustment so I thought I would wait for a few days before making any adjustments. The PFL670 is a 120 Hz so one sees no "judder" and its 2 ms response time is so fast you don't have ANY lag time or jerky movements during fast action scenes. The colors are bright and vivid it kind of reminded me of when I got new glasses my entire world brightened up. So it is with the Phillips TV. I have a friend who is a TV tech at a national electronics store coming over tomorrow. He told me he will be glad to make any adjustments since they don't sell Phillips at his store. He wants to be able to compare it to the Samsung and other models they do sell. He was very skeptical that the set would be "IN TUNE" right out of the box. If possible, I will come back and make additions and corrections to this review when he has completed his "tune up". In summary, my wife and I are both pleased beyond belief that we found a TV that meets all our needs including the lack of reflections by the matte screen. We wish that all our decisions would work out this well.

I want to add, that I don't think it fair that people mark a TV up or down with delivery issues. The delivery has nothing to do with the product and it's performance. Delivery is a separate issue. I rate the Phillips soley on it performance and its specs. I try to compare it to other products and their specs. When a product does not meet its specs it should be downgraded in the review. In the case of this particular Phillips TV, in my opinion, this model meets or exceeds all the specs. The contrast issue of 50K to 1 with this model is reduced by the matt screen. If you have a glossy screen you will have a sharper black. However, with a matte screen and a setting with the potential for reflection, our living room with a walk thru patio door, we were more concerned with reflection than we were with sharper blacks. After all, 50K is right up there with the best of them regardless of the matte screen.

 "Good buy" 2008-10-17
By Jerry Hughes
Gave this TV four stars but a high four stars after only having the set for a few days. Have NOT hooked up a Bluray player and to my understanding so far, that's the only source where you will CURRENTLY realize 1080p resolution. My cable box delivers 1080i and there may not be much of a difference but from what I've seen in the electronics stores, it does make a difference. Don't get me wrong, the picture on this LG is really nice but because I haven't tried Bluray, I don't see the very, very high detail I do at the stores. The stores have some TV's that are directly hooked to a Bluray player, thus the fantastic picture. So if you're thinking about this TV, simply see the picture for yourself in a store with Bluray.

Before buying this TV I compared its picture, right next to a Sony and some Samsung's. Every bit as good and in the case of the Sony, better! However, I'm disappointed with some of the views I've seen while at home, the biggest being the "distance" views of people's faces--what looks to be about 10 feet or so, away from the face. Less detail there than when very close up. Now, that could be my cable connection or the signal coming from my cable box, how the screen was shot, etc. Close up face pictures are fantastic.

This size TV is really nice, a true "home theater" experience and recommended minimum viewing distance from the set is about 8 feet! Size does matter. Ha. Oh, I wanted to mention this. If you're in the market for a wall mount I priced them at the stores. "Cir. Sity"= over $500 "Worst Buy"= $350 I ended up getting a mount on "Fleabay", that great on line auction site for about $100! It's called the "DUAL ARM LCD PLASMA MOUNT 37" 42" 50" 58" 63" SANUS 1" and it is one of the few wall mounts that will fit this TV. Be careful at the auctions. Some sellers will tell you their mount will fit but just look at their mount drawing that shows the dimensions. Must be 400 X 800 mm to work.

PROS ON THIS LCD: Nice picture and even though I've read other reviews on the poorer "black coloring" I've not noticed a problem with that. Love the "User 1" and "User 2" and other picture quality setting options. Yes, the settings make a difference when viewing HD or regular TV. (Access these quickly by sliding the plastic cover on the remote and hitting "Picture"----simple!) Love the size of the screen and the overall look of the set. Sound is average and a home theater system with a set like this is really the icing on the cake. Installation was pretty straight-forward. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to hook it up. Really like the USB hook up to show your home photos or to listen to your home music. Like the side mounted USB and S-video access and find the rear access not an inconvenience. I like being able to hook up my computer to the set too. This TV does a great job of showing good quality from stations that do not have HD too! Very nice picture.

CONS ON THIS LCD: Don't like the lessor quality picture in distance views but as mentioned, that could be my cable connection or what the movie was filmed in, better or worse definition, etc. (Varies with what you are watching) The information in the manual that comes with the TV is very poor and the on line manual and included C.D. is no better. It tells what the buttons on the remote are for and how to hook the TV up, etc. but nothing is really explained. Nothing. I guess the only way to get more info is to go directly to LG or through an on line forum.

I guess the bottom line is---just because it's an HD LCD TV don't expect this or any other HD set to give you a fantastic picture all the time. Too many factors, such as; what "broadcasters" are filming in, your personal settings, your cable company's set ups, etc. Do NOT watch the TV with the picture settings that come from the factory! You must go through all the settings and adjust them to your own eye. Only then will you get a good picture.

But if you're on the line of whether or not to buy, it truly is a home theater and I couldn't recommend it more highly. That being said, the news said that LCD's should drop in price, by half, by the day after Thanksgiving! You might want to hold off! Good luck.

Jerry

Update: I've watched movies and have determined that the problem with the lessor quality of picture of people, etc., further from the camera or in the background is the result of programs and movies NOT in HD or shot in a lessor resolution. The picture in HD is nothing less than fantastic!

Great TV and a good seller and received my purchase as they had said but I only wish I would have waited a few days as the same seller was selling the TV for $200 less than I paid and besides I wish I would have investigated the company then I would have found out they was in my state and therefore I had to pay state sales tax on my purchase.

"Solid purchase but shop around first" 2008-08-17
By David
While 1080p for this price is a decent value, there are significant drawbacks in picture quality. The black levels are not as good as more expensive brands or plasmas, which impacts movies and cable the most. The backlight is REALLY strong and gets really flashy/painful when bright scenes are suddenly displayed, like commercials. DVDs and Blurays look good but not great due to the black levels; I found the XD engine helpful for movies but it also distorts the overall picture in my opinion. Games look great on this tv; the notorious motion blur on LCDs is still present but not very noticeable/distracting. Overall this is a solid purchase but probably not the best, be sure to shop around for other brands/deals before settling on this one.

"Great value and it looks GREAT!" 2008-07-07
By J. Green (Houston, TX)
If you are considering this TV, it means you are probably looking for the best bang for the buck. I shopped months before making my decision and, although my original choice was not available, this LG has been GREAT. These are the high points:

Great Price

Great system options with all of the possible connections

It has a backlight control (for the wierdos who need "pure blacks")

1080p looks great on it (I use Comcast Cable and Sony PS3 Blue Ray)

Speakers work good

It offers a better viewing angle than most other LCD sets I shopped

So far (6 months), I have had no problems

I can tell you that once you get 1080p, you will only look for accesories with HDMI connections. I currently use all 3 and 1 one of my component connections. I have a Wii connected by components, and my cable box, PS3, and home theater are connected with the 3 HDMIs. I chose to use the stand instead of wall mounting because a stand makes it much easier to get to the wires in the back, but I don't think it would make a difference unless you have more than 3 HDMI devices.

I chose LCD over Plasma because I was worried about burn in from all of the sports and video games I enjoy. By the way, ESPNHD and PS3 looks awesome on this TV. I will say that non-HD programs don't look so good on the set, but who wants to watch non-HD stuff on a 1080p set anyway? I would definitely buy this set again knowing what I now know about it.

"Great TV, Be Careful of the Wall Mount Suggested" 2008-07-02
By Susan E. Routledge (KS)
A word of caution to those considering to buy this television (which I do recommend, it is a great TV at a great price), the wall mount suggested by amazon.com (Peerless ST650P Tilting Wall Mount for 32" to 50" Flat Panel Displays) IS NOT COMPATIBLE with this particular TV.

"Good screen with limited control" 2009-01-05
By
Do not let the three-star review concern you too much, I am pleased with this television purchase. However, the picture quality, clarity, and color saturation are not great but still a good value at the price. Similarly, the sound control is nightmarish. Anyone using this screen for television watching is advised to keep the set permanently muted and to wire the sound through ANY other speaker you can find. All in all, this is an average screen at a somewhat below average price. I would recommend this as a nice step into flat screen technology for those who aren't looking to drop the additional hundreds/thousands for a Samsung or Pioneer set but still want the improvements in television technology.

 "Excellent tv.." 2008-05-04

Bought this for my husband. Now we have to watch everything in HD it drives me crazy but the picture is incredible. We also bought the Peerless mount and mounted it to the wall it looks great.

"Excellent Picture, Excellent Design, Excellent Price" 2008-05-02
By Peter Foerster (Salem, WI)
I purchased this TV two months ago at a popular warehouse retail store. I had spent one month researching and shopping around. At the start of my research, I was leaning toward a 42" Plasma. Throughout my research process I determined that the LCD technology was equal to, and probably surpassing the plasmas. I decided to switch gears and only focus on LCD's. I had also been told by MANY of my peers that, "whatever size you are thinking about, go one higher assuming you have the space." I took their advice, and have not been disappointed.

My ultimate decision to purchase this Phillips model was in large part due to the cost; however I spent a considerable amount of time in the store fine tuning the picture on the floor model to make sure that I could achieve results that I was looking for. I found that within a short amount of time I could get the picture to look at least as good as all the other floor models, and better than the majority of them. The menus are not as easy to navigate through, as some other brands, but I see this as a non-factor. Once I set up the picture and programmed my favorite stations, it's simple to use.

I'm an Architect so overall set design was also important to me. I have to say that the Phillips, by far, was the best TV to look at, regardless of it being turned on. The TV stand, is very geometric, and constructed out of simple materials, without plastics. In my opinion the set would fit very well in any "contemporary" room. I recently hung mine on the wall with a peerless, tilting, wall mount, and concealed the cables. I'm slightly sad that I had to moth-ball the stand, however now the room looks like it has another piece of art on the wall. I couldn't be happier with the purchase. A great way to spend the Tax Return!!!

"Returned this for a samsung" 2008-04-09
By Matt (San Diego, CA)
Ok, let me start by saying I've never written a review before - but owning this TV compelled me to let you all know what to expect. I regretted buying this thing within a few hours of owning it. I bought it at another vendor and had 90 days to return it, so I stuck with it for about 2 months while I searched for a better TV, which ended up being the SAMSUNG 46" LNT4661F - which I'm VERY happy with.

I was replacing my plasma with an LCD because I started playing too many games and was starting to see some burn-in. So off to Store X to buy an lcd... And this Phillips looked good on display - and the price was right...

Ok... I'll give some pros:

1. HD looks pretty good - it's really not bad. Decent blacks, etc. If you are playing HD content and don't care about standard def, then you'll probably be ok.

2. It DOES do 1080p - and over component. I played my xbox 360 on it in 1080p mode over component. I don't know what some of these people were complaining about - either an old firmware or they don't know what the heck they are doing.

3. Inexpensive compared to some others.

4. The "remote insensitivity" thing someone mentioned was NOT an issue. The tv responds to the remote within seconds of turning on the TV.

Now my list of cons.

1. It's dim - I mean DIM. I had it cranked all the way up on the brightness and still - pretty dull. No amount of settings tweaking is going to help you get this thing brighter or more clear. I went on the forums and got people's "stellar settings" and they still were marginal at best. Better have a nice dark room. It's not unwatchable DIM, but you'll see what I mean when you start maxing out brigthness and go "wait - that's it?"

2. Standard Def looks TERRIBLE. I had a plasma before, and it looked fine. We all know SD won't look stunning, but jeez is looks god-awful on this thing. And when all the news (cnn, foxnews) is still in SD for the foreseeable future - you are gonna probably be watching SD at some point or another. Fuzzy and dim...

3. Random brightness changes. I'd be in the DVR menu for my cable box and select which program to watch, and a second later *bink* the brightness just changes to a little bit dimmer. I had turned off any "helper" features and any automated fixer-uppers - so why it was still automating stuff was very irritating. I don't remember this ever happening with HD content - and it would only seem to happen when I left my DVR menu - but I wouldn't want to find out later this is some known bug.

4. Viewing angle is poor. I'd move to the side and this thing got very dark in a hurry. Thought that was just an LCD thing until the new samsung I bought soon after looked fine at other angles.

5. Fuzzy picture on the xbox 360 (over component) during some stuff. I noticed the graphics on call of duty 4 during their loading phase were much more fuzzy than they had been on my plasma. However, while in-game I didn't seem to notice anything different. Also, the xbox dashboard and the "signed into xbox" things were always very fuzzy. I noticed that when I put my new Samsung LCD into "game mode" I got the same effect. It looks like the phillips is permanently stuck in that "game mode" for whatever reason - guess they want less ghosting or something. BTW, the samsung functions great for games without the "game mode" thing. I don't see any ghosting - but maybe I'm not looking closely enough.

So what I did...

I took this back got a SAMSUNG 46" LNT4661F. Wow! No kidding - night and day difference. Bright, I mean at 80% of brightness this thing was brigther than the brightest setting on the philips. Colors are vivid - especially in standard def. I'm not some weird tv viewer guy that has to have brightness and colors cranked up - which might be what you're thinking. No, they just pop out at you. The samsung has a great viewing angle as well. And very important to me - the Standard def looks fantastic - even when stretched across the screen to remove bars. HD looks great, of course. I'm not affiliated or selling samsung - just letting you know how happy I am with it.

So I know you're saying "well, sure the samsung is way more expensive - of course it's better." Well, sort of. It can be up to 400-500 more - but I had time to shop around - and ended up getting it for 100 bucks more than the phillips. If you can wait - wait for a great deal on a samsung - might take you 3-4 weeks but it's worth it. I did it online - which I was very paranoid about. No problems, no dead pixels, no DOA. They are on a truck all the time, whether that truck goes to any merchant or your house, it's probably gonna get there in one piece.

Bottom line. I'll never buy another phillips tv. If you can afford it, go with a samsung lcd.

 "A satisfied buyer" 2009-05-06
By F. Han (NJ, USA)
Just got this a few days ago at a great sale price (not from this site though), and I am quite pleased with the image and sound. The 47 inch screen may be a bit large for the room, but when it comes to movie viewing, you won't regret going with the largest screen size you can get away with, as this will add to the viewing experience. The picture quality is terrific, and although TV aficionados may be right about the superiority of plasmas over LCDs on black-levels, this is not an issue for me. I don't see any justification paying hundreds of dollars more for an equivalent-sized Panasonic plasma. As to the sound, the rear-facing "invisible" 15-watt speakers are more than adequate. Adjust the sound settings through an on-screen equalizer, and you get crisp sound with great volume. You won't have to buy external speakers, but a sub-woofer would be nice for those who want to shake up the room.

 "Happy with this TV" 2009-03-19
By ravich (New York, NY)
I bought this TV a week before Thanksgiving 2008. The remote is basic and the menu is dull and boring compared to say Samsung. But those are trivial details. I am happy with this TV. I have hooked up my cable and PS3 to this and all I can say is the picture quality is good, the sound is great. If you live in an apartment like me in NYC area, then trust me, you don't need a home theater system.

For just a little over 1K (thats what I paid), this TV is pretty nice. No complains.

"Terrible USB Support, customer service" 2009-02-13
By Preferred Customer (Fort Myers, FL USA)
Don't put any stock in the specs. First, the TV's slideshow feature DOES NOT support .alb files, even though it clearly states so in every spec sheet I have ever read, and it says explicitly so in the manual. The email and telephone customer support is terrible - they have no idea what you are talking about when you call. The email support does not allow you to respond to answers they give you (sent from an unattended email address). Finally, if you want to use this TV to do business presentations or show slideshows from a USB camera, drive, or flash device, you CANNOT SORT THE IMAGES. The TV does not sort by name, number, date, or anything that makes logical sense.

I happen to have discovered how the sorting is done, and was able to fix the issue myself with a third-party app that runs on Windows (it's easier in Linux). However, I am not giving up the secret because Philips does not deserve this service from me. The infuriated me so badly, I will never buy another Philips product.

Otherwise, the TV has mediocre performance, poor menus, and a bad remote.

Don't listen to all of the other reviews that say good connectivity. An LCD without PC input (except HDMI)?! What?! If it had PC input I wouldn't care so much about the USB stuff, but I can't do a presentation on this without going out and buying an HDMI capable laptop. (Don't tell me about S-Video - the picture is AWFUL on this TV).

DO NOT BUY THIS TV!

"Makes any regular DVD look HD" 2008-12-22
By David T. Webster (Jacksonville, FL)
We bought this TV at sams club and we got a 300 dollar in store gift card. We bought the TV for 1200, do the math...good deal!

Anyway, we were pleasantly surprised by how this tv makes our regular DVD's look HIGH DEF. For this, we're going to hold off on Blue-ray for awhile.

The TV is 120hz so the motion of the camera and subjects in the movie seem to move around different, but the quality is awsome.

I don't have a lot of Electronic jargon to throw at you but you need to know you won't be disappointed with this TV. The TV even has audio plug ins for 5.1 surround sound...I've only seen this on computers and receivers.

I'm not sure when the best time to buy a TV is since the price are always coming down. My advice is don't buy a TV with less than 120hz and 29,000:1 contrast ratio (depending on your budget). Because this is the cream of the crop right now...well you can get a contrast ratio better than that, but realistically, you shouldn't get anything lower than that.

Sears or most stores give you 60 days to keep your reciept for price matching. if you own a club membership, I highly recommend you look there first and ask about free giftcards with a large purchase like this.

This TV has a lot of grainy reception. Don't fall in love with the price (Wal-Mart) I have a HP 37" LC3760N and I think the world of it. If you are looking for a starter LCD TV start there.

 "TV" 2009-08-06
By Richard H. Seymour
TV arrived in good condition within time limits and after tech hooked it into my system it works very well. No problems using it on satellite system.

"WONDERFUL HDTV, Remote could use more buttons." 2009-06-05
By Cliff
This is a GREAT television, the only drawback is a limited remote, but I didn't think that should take away from the television itself... This TV is full 1080p Hi Def and is rare to find in televisions this size.... I am the envy of my PS3 owning friends, who have LCD 720p televisions and salivating at God of War 3 in 1080p (snickers) the other big plus of this television is PIP (has to be activated by disabling parental control)it not only has Pic-in-Pic but Pic-outside-Pic as well, which is great if u don't want to go blind watching the PIP programme lol... You can switch both feeds on the fly with the touch of a button. This feature is great for a Gamer like myself who wants to level up or game in-between commercials of my favorite programme, and switch back when commercials end. That feature was the selling factor for me, as this feature is RARE to find on 32" LCD televisions.

This is my first LCD TV and I am loving it, and I love the fact u can adjust picture position as well as stretch vertically and Horizontally to ensure the picture is always properly positioned, also contrary to another review, the picture setting per input stays, I have my component Input set on GAMING and my AV input set on MOVIE and they retain that setting whenever I switch between the two.

OVERALL THIS IS A GREAT TV FOR THE PRICE... A REAL DEAL...

"Nice TV, but all features aren't available as advertised." 2009-03-14
By BM
Pros:

Variable speaker setting allows external speakers to be adjusted using the TV's volume control.

Customizable caption is an interesting feature that allows you to customize the font, color and size of text on digital channels only. I had a Dynex that allowed customization on digital and analog channels.

Partial channel search is useful for when you're searching for viewable channels and don't want to do a whole channel search again. It's still no separate manual channel add like some other TV's.

Screen doesn't flash when changing aspect screen size.

1080p which on a 32" screen, doesn't show any difference between 720p. However, as a PC monitor the picture quality will be much sharper and not cropped when using clone mode.

PIP is also a nice feature to have. To make this work, you need go into parental settings and punch in 0000 and turn off the "rating enable" feature. The PIP should then work as it should on any source.

It has three v1.3 HDMI ports, two component, VGA PC input, two AV inputs and one headphone jack.

Changes channels fast and can easily switch to TV mode when changing to a channel from any other input.

The name VIZIO lights up in white while on and orange when off.

Powers on quickly compared to my old Olevia and Dynex. From the moment the remote button is pressed, this TV took 8 seconds to fully power on. My old Olevia took at least 15 seconds before you could see the screen and/or control anything. The Dynex took 12 seconds to power on.

Cons:

The manual implies that this TV has a guide that allows you to see what's on now, later and displays the time. Not anymore. I contacted Vizio about this and was told that the recent TV's being shipped has updated firmware that removed this feature, yet neither the manual or online manual has been updated. I was told that Vizio is working on this and will find a way to get this feature back to the "updated" TV's. But because there is no guide, there is no time display either. I also found out that there are two versions of this TV. One is made in China while the other is made in Mexico which apparently doesn't have the guide.

Another thing I'd like to mention is that this TV doesn't have separate input settings. My Olevia and Dynex were able to have separate settings for every input. Say I wanted to have max color on HDMI, but half color on component, can't have that with this TV. So basically, I'd have to find some universal settings that look good on all input sources or constantly adjust them for every input.

One weird thing is that this TV remembers the volume levels for different inputs. You could have the volume at 10 for TV mode, but switch over to AV mode and it would be at 15 or switch to component and it would be 8. It would be whatever the last volume level was for that mode. I don't know if this is an error on Vizio's part or what.

Doesn't remember the aspect ratio of the screen for different inputs. My 2 year old Olevia could do this. I could set TV mode to 4:3 and component to 16:9 and it would automatically return to those ratios when using that specific input. If the remote wasn't so simple and had the buttons on it for these functions, I wouldn't worry about it. I'd just hit the button to change it. Having to go though the menus for everything gets annoying. The only alternative for now is to order the remote for the VW32L. It's looks kind of plain compared to the one included, but it has all the buttons I'm looking for.

This TV doesn't have an antenna signal strength bar. This is useful if you're forced to use an antenna doing a cable/sat outage or if you just want free HD channels.

Doesn't have simple bass, tremble, etc settings for the speakers. No big deal if your using a surround system or any other external speakers like me.

Doesn't have caption on mute. This is useful if you need to mute the TV for any reason, but still want to know what's being said.

 "I am impressed!!" 2009-02-14
By Tommy Noe (Morristown, TN United States)
I purchased this newest version of a Vizio 32 inch with 1080P. I am very impressed with the picture and sound. Two HDMI inputs for my high definition cable box and my blu ray DVD player. Crystal clear picture and the sound is amazing. This makes the second Vizio tv that I have purchased. I also own the 42 inch plasma Vizio. The sound on the 32 inch is so much better. The picture quality is awesome on both too. I highly recommend this product!!

 "AWESOME!!!!!!!" 2009-02-28
By S. Cardwell
After a couple of months of researching LCD televisions, I narrowed my search to Sony, Samsung, Visio and LG.

I saw models of the first 3 brands that I was interested in, but couldn't find a store that carried the LG Scarlet........until I visited Conn's when they were advertising a lower end LG model at a really great price.

I was checking that one out and just wasn't that pleased with it.....and then I noticed right above it was the LG 47LG60 Scarlet. It was hands down the most attractive of all the televisions with an awesome picture.

So instead of buying at the store, I came home and made my purchase through Amazon.com and couldn't be more pleased..........with the service, with the delivery and best of all - with the television.

By Zack Sonshine (New Jersey)
OK lets talk about features that some people don't understand and would like if considering this unit. It has 1080i resolution. (possibly best than can be seen by the human eye) Resolution speaks for it's self.

Now here's where people get cheap, misinformed, exc. it has 120Hz Technology. What does that mean? Producers of movies, sporting events, TV shows and alike constantly move the camera. (unless your watching c-span) While moving the camera, on a 60hz model you will notice blurriness.. It gets quite annoying to say the least, if your watching an action movie, it is not nearly as sharp as what you could possibly be watching. Going with that... The 120Hz "Feature" technology, the screen faster so images are not blurred. (so much you can actually tell it's a stunt double, or in the matter of sports, view details much more precisely with out waiting for the slow motion replay.)

The combination of the 1080, and 120Hz IN THE STORE, is usually under rated by poor wiring. A proper DVI/HDMI cable MUST BE USED to get 100% of the TVs potential.

Add this all together, and based on my experience with Digital Cable, HDMI Cable ( standard 1.3 ) , and the 47LG60. I haven't left the tv.. I wish more/all channels came in HD..

It's ridiculous to explain the resolution/detail. It's like I never REALLY was truly watching TV before this set. Allow me to elaborate quickly. I now see that the camera is not on a tripod in 90% of shows / movies.. it bobbles around constantly. In fact now with the HUGE TV, i find myself kinda getting motion sick / car sick because in bobbles so frequently. Secondly I see every detail. Not to name shows, but you can see a SINGLE stray hair on an actress's head and be amazed, that watching your nightly news, the anchor man has dog hair on his suit, visible now, unseen before... and finally. Hollywood's actors act horrible.. their movements now in HD are MUCH more obvious and don't seem real.

My evaluation.. buy yourself an awesome 1080 120hz LCD TV. Get an HD tuner, and watch TV for a week straight.. if you don't realize what you've been missing in the first 5 minutes.. I'll invite you to come view mine, the 47LG60, and watch me outburst with "OMG do/did you see that?!" Enjoy.

When I first started looking for an HDTV for my husband and did some research I had decided to purchase a smaller Bravia or possibly a Vizio. We walked into Best Buy and started looking at the specs on various models just to get ideas. I had read earlier in the day that you should ignore the picture of the TV while in a retail store and only look at the hardware esthetics and the specs as some retailers will try to make certain expensive models look better than other models.

With that in mind we began our actual comparisons and found that the models on the walls with the best specs were all well over $2000. We had decided that we definitely needed the 120hz rather than the 60hz in order to ensure we had the TV for a longer period of time and we wanted the 1080p not the 1080i. After browsing and beginning to think we were going to have to go with a smaller 42" TV for the price point we wanted to stay with we met a salesperson who showed us this TV. The picture was great, the specifications were better than the Bravia's and Vizio's we were looking at and the sale price was $1299.00! We continued to review the specs and looking for the hitch. We could not find one.

We decided to bring the TV home that night with the understanding that we could return it within 30 days if we decided to but we have now had it for four weeks and we absolutely love it. We sit about 6-7 feet from the TV and the picture is clear, the TV easy to use and we have had to switch our DVR recordings over to the HD channels because everything on the regular channels looks awful because the picture is so good. Note: the contrast ratio on this TV is 50,000:1 vs. the 30,000:1 you typically see on much higher priced TV's.

We are very happy with our choice of TV and wouldn't switch it out with anything else we have seen.

We purchased this item Dec 11 and it was delivered Tuesday, Dec 16. It is amazing. I feel like the characters in the programs are right in the room with us. The clarity is amazing. This is our third LG HDTV and it is the best. The price on Amazon was a terrific value and included white glove delivery. This was the first time we had anything delivered by Pilot Freight and they were courteous and prompt. They called on Monday, Dec 15 to set up the delivery day and time and worked with our schedule. The driver called and gave us an exact delivery time. We are very satisfied with our purchase.

My friend bought 2 tv's just like this. One he placed in his home, the other in the office where we get to watch HD and blu ray videos and concerts. He also bought additional speakers to have a theater effect. Everything was perfect. The colors were superb, the pictures were excellent - you could very well see the details. Am saving up to buy my own.
