 "Such a deal" 2009-11-13

I really owe it to Amazon that I own this television. I put it on my wish list and intended to buy it... someday. I owned a 55" 1080i Mitsubishi CRT that weighed 450lbs. I surfed through Amazon one day and this "personal ad" popped up that said, "this television is on your wish list, when are you going to buy it?" I printed out the information on the television and went to our local "blue" store with the ad in my hand. I wanted to see it in person. They had it on display. I played with the remote. A salesman walked up and asked if I like it. "I love it," I told him, "I just can't afford your price. I wish you could match this one..." He looked at the paper in my hand. "I'll match it," he told me. Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather. I bought the television the next week at the price Amazon quoted (nearly $700 off the retail price!). We donated the old television to an underprivileged family. They appreciated our old TV as they had a small 19 inch color CRT. We were happy for them. But I have to tell you, after we hooked up the smaller 47" the difference was striking from the start. Not only do old DVD's look better, but HD broadcasts, such as NBC (which looks the best) and CBS are extremely sharp. I'm an NFL fan and football games are incredible. The 240hz completely eliminates the "pixil" look during football games we saw on other televisions. The PS3 seems like a new system. Old games are sharper and clearer. The blue ray movies jump off the screen like 3D. Would I buy the TV through Amazon? Absolutely. However, as things worked out, it must have been kismet.

TV arrived a few days ago, so I've just had a chance to hook it up and watch a couple of movies.

Picture quality is great (I have a very bright room with lots of skylights and windows) and was easy to set up. It's a glass highly reflective screen, so I think if you have windows or lights directly in front of the screen you may get a glare issue...but I don't have that problem.

No dead pixels.

It arrived in about a week, on the exact day that it was expected.

So far, no complaints but if I find one I'll definately update this.

The shipper had very good things to say about Amazon's return policy. Hopefully I won't have to try that out...but it was one of my concerns. Seems like I can return it within 30 days for any reason (including I'm just not happy).

"Great picture, but beware of what you are getting." 2009-11-01

I jumped on this TV pretty quickly, great size, great technology, and good reviews across the web. The picture quality is very good, the blacks are mediocre but overall a great looking picture and a great looking TV. I am a huge movie fan and watch lots of Blu-Ray movies and so the ability to play Blu-Ray's in 24p mode was a huge plus for me. I started watching a few movies, and left the 240hz setting on low. This setting, while some may like, I really did not care for. It introduced a lot of artifacts in the film. Often when the camera would pan quickly around different subjects it would create a halo looking deal making it look like there is an invisible forcefield around different objects. The frame interpolation makes things look really smooth and create a soap opera effect or video camera effect to the movies. This made it feel like I was no longer watching a movie and this was a big time no-no for me. So I started researching the TV some more.

The 240hz is a refresh rate so that has nothing to do with adding frames. The frame interpolation is another thing that attempts to add frames that did not exist before to create a smoother look to the image. The problem lies here in the way LG decided to implement this technology. To get the benefits of having 240hz and reducing motion blur, you must turn on the dejuddering frame interpolation also. There is no way to turn on one and not the other. The Samsung and Toshiba models have options to turn the 240hz on and off and the frame interpolation on and off SEPARATELY.

Now I must say, for sports it made it look amazing, but since my primary use of a television is to watch movies this was a major downside and I ended up having to return the TV because the 240hz motion plus pretty much ruined the movie experience for me. Some people may like it, but if you like to keep your film viewing as true to the original as possible you may want to think twice and check this TV out in a store to see if you really like this mode or not.

Sports were great, video gaming was good, and the picture quality and extensive picture control are all amazing on this TV, but that one setting ruined the experience for me.

"Great TV at a Reasonable Price" 2009-11-01

We finally replaced an old projection large screen TV with this LG. We had admired my mother's LG, so thought this one would be okay. We checked out all the other brands at the "big box" stores, and for the price, LG came out on top. The picture is crystal clear, and with the 240Hz, there is no blur, even during football games. We feel like we're down on the field. The blacks are black, the color is stunning. We have some seating that is at quite an angle, and even there, the picture is clear. We hooked it up to our surround sound system, but when we checked out the sound before connecting the surround sound, we were very pleasantly surprised. It's excellent. It was very easy to set up, and the menu system is clear and understandable. It even made our old CDs look so much better. This TV is as good as the more expensive ones, at considerably less cost, especially given the Amazon price and the free shipping.
